Regarding the news reports yesterday that the investigation report will be made public soon, I would like to offer some of my views on what could have happened. Take note that these are all speculation and that I have no knowledge of what is contained in that report.
There are many factors that can contribute to a failure during the demolition process. These are:
1. Lacking in procedures and guidelines to carry out a safe demolition job.
2. Risk Assessment not completed before and during the demolition phase.
3. Site operatives not following laid down method statements on the sequence of work and procedures.
4. Inadequate temporary supports to the structure or the elements of the structure being demolished. Temporary support should be provided for any or combination of the following conditions:
a. When the whole or any part of the structure is subjected to excess loading derived from the demolition activities, movement of powered mechanical plants or debris accumulation. Overloading in term of impact of falling large debris and accumulated debris on the floor may cause the floor to give way and result in chain reaction effect to the lower floor. Extra loading from the machinery used on top of the building should also be considered to prevent excessive loading.
b. When any part of the structure or any element being demolished is not self-supporting; or
c. When the temporary stability of the structure or its elements could be impaired as a result of the demolition activities.
5. In case of prestessed concrete structure (constructed of either precast or cast-in-place concrete in which prestressing is introduced to the concrete by tensioning the steel reinforcement, or tendon, to counteract a desired degree of stress resulting from a given external loading – Hong Kong Code of Practice for Demolition) any accidental and unplanned cutting of tendons may cause the elements of building structure (Beams or Slabs) to rapture and become unstable. The prestressed concrete floor system shall be properly shored prior to detensioning to prevent the collapse of the system. The release of energy during the demolition of prestressed concrete could be extremely hazardous.
6. Lack of site supervision and inspection during the demolition job.
These are some of the general factors that can cause failure during demolition works. I am in no way referring to any specific cases here!

Jaya nostalgia
Aiks I feel sad sometimes when thnking about old JS. I used to hang out there maybe too much as a kid. I knew all the shopkeepers, even the glum looking fellas in Poh Kong or watatime. they never seem to have any customers but the outlets never shut down. lunch and sometimes dinner was usually at Jaya Noodle House - Ipoh Hor Fun was quite good.
My only video/VCD (now DVD) store was there, run by the two brothers, just by the car park lobby by starbucks. For the whole ten years plus, the bigger brother there kept his long hair. Always ignore the mamak fler selling movies by the staircase. They've moved to jaya 33 now so I'm still stacked high with DVDs.
then there was pineapple computers. their shop was so cluttered with barang-barang i wonder if they even knew what the had. I found a video card for my old 486 there about 3 years ago. amazing! and it workedd, too, but when the aauntie took it down from the TOP SHELF behind a stack of PC-AT casings, it was so dusty and dotted with cicak tahi, I was reluctant to pay for it! but since auntie gave me a price of rm30....take la. and it worked!

Why Jaya?
I am sure we are all familiar with what happened at the old Jaya Supermarket. For those of you who are still blur on this, basically the old jaya supermarket in section 14 PJ had a runtuhan on May 28th - but not a scheduled one. According to news reports, it was scheduled to be brought down at 6pm by controlled demolition - but something happened to make that happen about 1 hour earlier. The MBPJ and IEM are investigating but so far no results. Why is it taking so long leh? I've seen case studies of other similar incidences like the trade centre in HK - famous case that one, at least among structural and civil engineers - and they had a report out in 1 month! But really, I shouldnt comment. why? because there is little information coming out about the developments in this case! There is something in the newspapers, like stopwork order lifted and residents grumbling and such, but nothing really to give us insight into what happened.
Also my friends asking, 'why la JMC you want to setup a blog for this? Boring la!' But I say, no. Jaya Supermarket, or JS, is an institution of my youth. Growing up in PJ in the 80s I used to go there all the time after school, and sometimes during school also! my nostalgia for that old, ugly building is very strong and i am sad that this is what has become of it - a pile of rubble. But my recollections of old JS I will compile into another post. theres just too many. who can ever forget climbing down that silly spiral staircase? or the super-crowded pineapple IT store? everything also got...even parts for my old 486. why I have a 486 still running is anough for another post!
